Marple is a detective story writer whose works have earned her a place among the greatest mystery novelists of all time. Her name means 'an old woman' in old English, and she penned her first novel at age 78.
In addition to being a master of suspense, Agatha Christie also adopted many of Marple's techniques. The result is that both authors'reputation as soothing influences on readers' minds as they delved into their series of mysteries.
In her first novel, A Study in Scarlet, Arthur Conan Doyle introduces two characters synonymous with the mystery genre: detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. John Watson. Each character has his own series of novels to his name, but their partnership remains their most famous attribute.
The two men became national celebrities upon publication of the adventures chronicling their association with the famous 'woman's mind': Lady Frances 'Frances' Hodgson Ewing. To avoid confusion with another famous detective by that name, Marpeller (the female version of 'Agatha'), she chose to go by a male pen name.
The setting for Marple's mysteries is the fictional village of Chasing Fate, based on the real village of Biddenden. It sits on the banks of the River Fate in Kent County, England.
According to Marple's biographer, each novel begins with an account of the protagonist moving to Chasing Fate from another town. Initially troubled by the village atmosphere, Marple's main characters soon come to appreciate and respect its beauty and charm. As time passes in these novels, however, darker elements enter into play- making it seem as if fate is chasing these characters instead of a happy ending.
Marples creates a pleasant atmosphere in her novels that others have likened to country living or village life. She uses gentle phrasing and cheery images to present her mysteries in an uneasy way that will leave readers feeling relaxed but unsettled at the same time.
Both Holmes and Watson find Marple's works particularly soothing because they tend to focus on individuals rather than teams of detectives. This allows for more interaction between characters and thus greater narrative tension.
